Five Ways to Live Healthier That Wont Break the Bank

We live in an era where any topic you want to learn about is at your fingertips. Just type anything health-related into the search engine, and you'll find more articles than you can read. While this information has an advantage, it can also make it difficult to discern what guidance to follow.

Often, the simplest things can provide the greatest reward, and cultivating health is no different. Media advertisements offer an array of "quick fixes" for our health needs, such as pills, shakes, diet plans, and products. There is an idea that we need something external to fix our health. I challenge you to embrace the idea that much of this control lies within us.

Below are five necessities that I feel are often overlooked but hold enormous power in cultivating better health. Consider integrating these few things into your lifestyle and aim for consistency, not perfection.

Nutrition

This is a topic that we tend to complicate and for a valid reason. There are many opinions surrounding what, when, and how to eat. In keeping it simple let's consider what is compatible with our body. This means prioritizing whole foods our body recognizes and consuming less processed food. Processed food tends to come with a laundry list of ingredients that have inflammatory effects on the body. Sticking with lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and limiting sweets is always a good place to start.

Sleep

This seems like a simple concept, but often doesn't get the attention it deserves. Prioritize getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night when able. I know, it's easier said than done, especially if you have children or a full schedule. There are seasons where this ideal may not be met and is beyond our control. Sleep is important not only for feeling rested for the next day but also for a healthy immune system.

Relationships

We weren't meant to live in isolation, and positive relationships can help us through challenging times. Doing our best to cultivate healthy, meaningful relationships can be extremely beneficial for our mental being. Making time to share a laugh with a friend or a hug is a sure way to plus one your health.

Managing stress

No one is immune to feeling stressed at times. Finding ways to manage stress such as yoga, prayer or meditation, going for a walk, or talking with a trusted resource is extremely important. Chronic stress can hurt not only our mental, but also our physical health in the long-term.

Movement

There are many ways to incorporate physical exercise into your daily routine. Maybe something organized outside of the house like going to the gym or meeting a friend for a walk. Or maybe doing yoga at home while the kids take a nap if you're a mom. It doesn't matter how you're doing it, it's that you’re routinely moving your body. This positively affects your mental health as well!

Sometimes the simplest things do yield the biggest results. These are all natural requirements our body needs that are foundational to greater health. Try integrating a few into your daily routine, you may be surprised how much better you feel!
